A POEM BY STEPHEN CRANE

A MAN SAID TO THE UNIVERSE

While sitting at a restaurant one night, there was a decorative book on the table. While flipping through it I happened upon a poem. For one reason or another, the poem really resonated with me. It was called " A man said to the universe" a short poem by American poet, novelist, and writer Stephen Crane. I knew immediately that I wanted to animate it in some way, and hopefully in the end, I did it some justice. I always enjoy doing some character design and creating the world it takes place in. Thanks to Ben Foster and Matt Abbott for the help with the voice acting. Also, to the server that night for kindly offering the book for me to keep...which I most certainly did.

ORIGINAL ARTWORK

This is some of the original artwork I did for the piece. There were a number of iterations of the world as well as the "Universe" character before I landed on the final design.

THE BOOK

This is the book from the restaurant in Brooklyn. Thanks again for the server for letting me keep it. A lot of great writing from a huge variety of authors in the book.

CHARACTER DESIGN

The character of "The Man" was created in photo shop and then rigged and animated in Adobe After effects. His scarf was created in Cinema 4d.

THE UNIVERSE

I found inspiration for the design of "The Universe" while walking around at the MET, in New York. There are some amazing pieces in the Africa and Oceania collection of sculptures and artwork. It's far and away my favourite section of the museum, and heavily influenced this design.
